Steven Howard Koch died suddenly in a car accident on May 9, 2024 on the way to his service mission at the Lindon Home Storage Center in Lindon, Utah. He was born to Kenneth Howard Koch and Rhonda Mardell Agutter Koch in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 21,1950 as the 2nd oldest of 5 siblings. Steven was raised in Holladay, Utah and graduated from Olympus High School in 1969 after which he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Gulf States Mission spending much of his time in Louisiana.
After his mission he attended college and worked at the nearby Dan's grocery store where, to his good fortune, he met Pamela Wilhelm. The two fell in love and married on June 6, 1974 in the Salt Lake City Temple. After a short time in Grand Junction, Colorado, Steve and Pam settled in Sandy, Utah where they raised their children and where Steve spent his career as a commercial property manager and broker. Pam and Steve ultimately settled in Lehi, Utah when retirement arrived.
Steve loved to watch BYU football and basketball games on TV, always giving all he had to try and help the team win. This included leaning sideways and backward on the couch in an effort to help a running back or receiver avoid a tackle, sticking out his tongue in concentration, and yelling coaching advice at the TV screen. The coaches rarely took his advice, but when they did he would sit back proudly and say something like, "That's right, throw it to the tight ends, I've been saying that all game!"
He never forgave the rest of the family who sided against him and voted to give away the first, burdensome, under-the-fence digging, family dog named Corky. He got his revenge by spending the rest of his life collecting dogs and filling the house with them. He could always be found relaxing on his bed surrounded by 2 or 3 protective, but snoozing, hounds who loved him unconditionally. They would follow him around, close at his heels, as if he had raw tenderloins dangling from his pant legs.
Steve was almost always satisfied with the material things he had, happy to live a simple life while giving to others as much as he could. He modeled the old saying, "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without". He could be found putting pieces of cardboard in his shoes in an effort to "repair" a hole in the sole, preferring the comfort of the well-worn to being forced to shop for new ones. His wife will not miss that.
Steve loved funny movies. Some of his favorites were: National Lampoon's Vacation (the clean, TV version of course, and the Christmas production in particular), Wild Hogs, The Naked Gun, and Down Periscope. His laugh was so boisterous and infectious that everyone in the house would put down what they were doing in order to watch him enjoy the movie.
His greatest devotion in life was his faith in, and service to, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints. He served in many callings throughout his life including Bishopric counselor, High Priest group leader, Sunday School teacher, Scout leader, temple ordinance worker and senior service missionary at the Lindon Home Storage Center (where he was serving at the time of his passing). He will be missed by his family and friends until the day when we can again be reunited.
Steve joins his granddaughter, Mckenzie Gwilliam, and both his parents beyond the veil. He is survived by his wife Pamela (Wilhelm) Koch, his 4 children Troy (Molly) Koch, Heath (Amy Morrey) Koch, Tyler Koch, Tiffany Koch Gwilliam, his 10 grandchildren, and his 4 brothers and sisters: Gail Koch, David (Tina) Koch, Roger (Anita) Koch, and Sherrie (Boyd) Hansen.
A viewing will be held from 6-8 pm on Friday, May 17, 2024 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building located at 220 W 200 S, Lehi, Utah 84043
A short viewing will also be held the next day, Saturday May 18, 2024 from 10:00-10:30 am at the same building. It will be immediately followed by funeral services from 11:00 am -12:00 pm.
